University Research Forests fonds. 1925-1960.

The fonds consists of records chronicling the history and development of UBC's Research Forests both at Point Grey and Haney, B.C. The fonds includes correspondence, reports, financial records, maps, surveys, blueprints and photographs. The records also contain information about the operation of the Summer Camp for forestry students (1948-1960).

F. Malcolm Knapp, who taught forestry at UBC for over forty years, was born in New York State. After completing degrees in forestry at the New York State College of Forestry and the University of Washington, he came to the University of British Columbia in 1922 and began his long association with the institution as a lecturer. Since the inception of the University of British Columbia Department of Forestry in 1921, the forest surrounding the campus at Point Grey has provided a valuable outdoor laboratory. By the late 1930s, however, the inadequacy of the campus forest to serve as an experimental or research forest was recognized.
